Today, Senator George Borrello responded to Governor Kathy Hochul's State of the State address. He expressed concerns about the governor's proposals, highlighting areas he believes require more attention and action.

Borrello acknowledged that Governor Hochul addressed important issues such as affordability and mental health but criticized her proposals for lacking depth. "While she touched on some important topics like affordability and mental health, her proposals raise more questions than answers, and there are glaring omissions that can’t be ignored," he stated.

The senator emphasized the need for comprehensive solutions to rising costs affecting New Yorkers. "Middle-class tax cuts, inflation refund checks, and an expanded Child Tax Credit may sound promising, but they will mean little to families already burdened by skyrocketing expenses," Borrello noted. He pointed out potential financial burdens from Climate Act mandates and costly regulations impacting small businesses.

Public safety was another concern for Borrello. He criticized the governor for not addressing New York's sanctuary status or cooperating with federal authorities on deportations. "Ignoring them puts public safety at risk and leaves us at odds with federal law," he argued.

Borrello also highlighted the absence of any proposal to amend bail reform laws. "Every day, more New Yorkers are hurt or killed because of this reckless law," he said, emphasizing the need for a dangerousness standard similar to those in other states.

He expressed disappointment over the lack of progress on a new gaming compact with the Seneca Nation, describing it as an unresolved issue affecting Western New York.

On mental health reforms, Borrello found common ground with Governor Hochul. He supported expanding criteria for involuntary commitment and strengthening Kendra’s Law but cautioned that significant political effort would be required to implement these changes.

In conclusion, Borrello called for strong leadership and real solutions as New Yorkers await further details in the Executive Budget release. "New Yorkers need strong leadership and real solutions," he asserted.
