Senator George Borrello has announced that Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law a bill he sponsored to rename State Route 19 in the Town of Gainesville as the "T Sgt. Walter W. Shearing Memorial Highway." The legislation, also supported by Assemblyman David DiPietro, aims to honor the memory of Walter Shearing, a local hero who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was killed in action.
"Walter Shearing bravely served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against fascism in Europe," said Senator Borrello. He emphasized that while no tribute can fully repay this debt, dedicating a portion of Route 19 ensures future generations recognize Sgt. Shearing's contributions and understand the cost of freedom.
Walter Shearing was born to farming parents in Gainesville, Wyoming County. Despite qualifying for a farm deferment, he enlisted after Pearl Harbor and became a drill instructor instead of attending Officer Candidate School. Deployed overseas with Patton’s 7th Army, he fought in significant battles including the Battle of the Bulge before being killed on April 17, 1945, at age 27.
Assemblyman DiPietro expressed pride in honoring Walter Shearing: "Though our debt to this brave American can never be repaid, we can ensure his legacy is remembered and appreciated in his hometown."
Senator Borrello concluded by acknowledging Veterans Day as a reminder of freedom's cost: "I extend my gratitude to Assemblyman DiPietro for co-sponsoring this legislation and to Governor Hochul for enacting it into law."
