Chautauqua County Government has advised residents in northern Chautauqua County and surrounding areas to avoid unnecessary travel due to ongoing hazardous winter weather. The regions affected include Ripley, Westfield, Portland, Dunkirk/Fredonia, Sheridan, and Silver Creek.

The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for the area. Forecasts predict snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet in the most persistent bands, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 mph. These conditions are expected to result in poor visibility and snow-covered roads.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads whenever possible and monitor weather updates closely. For those who must travel, it is important to be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and ensure vehicles are equipped for emergencies.

Due to adverse weather conditions, the Dunkirk DMV office at 3998 Vineyard Drive is closed today but plans to reopen during normal business hours tomorrow if weather permits. Residents needing DMV services can visit alternate locations or use online services at dmv.ny.gov.

Alternate DMV locations include:

- Jamestown DMV: 512 W. 3rd St., Jamestown, NY 14701; Phone: 716-661-8220; Fax: 716-661-8292

- Mayville DMV: Hall Clothier Building, 7 N. Erie St., Mayville, NY 14757; Phone: 716-753-4229; Fax: 716-753-4521

Operating hours for these locations are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Chautauqua County appreciates residents' patience and cooperation during this winter storm while noting that all other county services remain open.
