On December 15, 1873, women in Fredonia made strides against alcohol by marching to close saloons, contributing to the formation of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. The same day in 1893, a rail accident near Dunkirk resulted in five fatalities. In Busti, 1894 marked the county's first unsolved murder involving Laura White Shearman and her daughter. Also notable was Jamestown's first Church of God congregation organized in 1922 and Frewsburg consolidating its schools into a central district in 1947.
December 16 saw an agreement between New York and Massachusetts settle territorial claims over western New York in 1786. In more recent history, Quality Markets opened at Chautauqua Mall in 1970, enhancing local retail options.
On December 17, the Samuels Opera House opened in Jamestown in 1894 and became known as the Lucille Ball Little Theater. A gas explosion claimed the life of Town Supervisor Loren W. Stebbins in Hanover Center on this date in 1924.
