County urges residents to clear snow from fire hydrants

With the region experiencing heavy snowfall, Chautauqua County has issued a call to residents to assist in clearing snow from fire hydrants. This effort is crucial for ensuring that firefighters have quick access during emergencies, which can be vital in saving lives and property.

Local fire departments are actively working to keep hydrants free of snow but require community support. Residents are encouraged to clear snow from hydrants near their homes or businesses, contributing significantly to public safety amid challenging weather conditions.

"Seconds count during a fire," stated Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr., who also serves as a volunteer firefighter. "Snow-covered hydrants can delay our ability to connect to a water source and can mean the difference between saving a home or business and losing it entirely. I urge everyone to pitch in and help keep hydrants visible and accessible."

Chautauqua County Emergency Services Coordinator Noel M. Guttman highlighted the importance of shared responsibility during extreme weather events. "While fire departments are proactively working to clear hydrants, there are simply too many across the county for them to manage alone. Clearing a three-foot perimeter around a hydrant and ensuring it’s accessible from the street can make all the difference when seconds matter."

The County advises residents on several measures:

- Clear snow from all sides of the hydrant, creating a three-foot radius around it.

- Ensure a clear path from the hydrant to the street.

- Regularly check hydrants after plows pass to ensure they remain visible.

Safety is paramount when clearing hydrants; residents should be cautious of traffic and wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night. Taking breaks and avoiding overexertion while shoveling heavy snow is also recommended.

Clearing hydrants can serve as an opportunity for group activities among families, neighbors, or friends, fostering community bonds while enhancing safety.

Residents' efforts in keeping neighborhoods safe by maintaining accessible fire hydrants are greatly appreciated by local authorities.
