Volunteers are set to deliver gifts and meals to over 200 seniors in Chautauqua County as part of the "Santa for Seniors" campaign. This initiative, organized by the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services and community partners, aims to bring holiday cheer to isolated seniors on December 12, 2024.
Over the past month, volunteers have been collecting, sorting, and packing donations. The final step involves delivering these festive gift bags and meals directly to seniors' homes. Dana Corwin, Director of the Office for Aging Services, emphasized the program's broader purpose: “This program is about so much more than the gifts,” she said. “It’s about connecting with seniors who may feel forgotten during the holidays.”
Deliveries will begin Thursday morning with county employees, local church groups, and volunteers participating. The preparation involved various community members and organizations such as Rev. J. Paul Womack Christmas Basket Fund at Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church and The First Baptist Church of Mayville.
Corwin expressed gratitude towards those involved: “The success of this program would not be possible without the compassion and collaboration of so many.” Each gift bag includes practical items, holiday treats, and hand-packed meals.
The hub for this year's campaign is First Baptist Church in Mayville. Volunteers from different backgrounds will ensure that every senior receives a moment of holiday cheer. This event has become a tradition for many families who participate together.
