US households can now obtain four free COVID-19 tests, which will be mailed directly to their addresses. These tests are designed to detect current variants of the virus and are usable through the end of the year. Orders can be placed online at www.COVIDTests.gov.
An alternative option is the Orasure InteliSwab test, which caters to individuals who are blind or have low vision, as well as those with low manual dexterity. More information and ordering instructions for this test can be found at www.ACL.gov/AccessibleTests.
Both types of test kits can also be ordered by phone by calling 1-800-232-0233 to reach the CDC Information line. Callers should:
Select language: Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish, 3 for other languages
Press 1 to order regular COVID-19 at-home tests
Press 8 to order more accessible tests or remain on the line to order regular tests
Many COVID-19 tests come with extended expiration dates. Users may find that their tests are still valid after the printed expiration date on the box. The expiration date is determined based on the shelf-life during manufacturing, but in some cases, it may be extended if manufacturers provide data showing a longer shelf-life than initially known. For further details about expiration dates and extensions, visit https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices.
The FDA advises repeating testing following a negative result from most at-home OTC COVID-19 diagnostic tests, regardless of symptoms, to minimize false negatives. They encourage voluntary and anonymous reporting of test results via MakeMyTestCount.org or through any app or digital option provided with your test.
Another way to acquire a free at-home COVID-19 test is by contacting your local Office for Aging Services. Tests are available at locations in Dunkirk, Mayville, and Jamestown.
For additional assistance, contact the Office for Aging Services and NY Connects by visiting one of their offices, emailing ccnyc@chqgov.com, or calling 716-753-4582.
