Senator George Borrello addressed the challenges presented by drug abuse at the 5th Annual United Nations Global Conference for a Drug-Free World held on Friday, March 22 at U.N. Headquarters in New York. The forum was part of the 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), the UN's largest annual gathering on gender equality and women's empowerment.
Senator Borrello highlighted the widespread impact of drug abuse, stating, “The 57th Senate District is one of the most rural areas in New York State... drug abuse has impacted every community I represent.” He emphasized that drug abuse transcends demographic boundaries, describing it as a universal challenge that requires collective action.
Furthermore, Senator Borrello expressed his personal connection to the issue, noting, “As someone who has witnessed the devastating impact of drug abuse firsthand... combating drug abuse isn't just a policy agenda for me—it's personal.”
Chautauqua County Executive, Paul M. Wendel Jr., echoed Senator Borrello's sentiments, emphasizing the county's unwavering commitment to addressing drug abuse. He expressed gratitude towards Senator Borrello for his advocacy and acknowledged Ambassador Hugues Sanon for his support in combating drug addiction in the region.
In response, Senator Borrello expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the global conference, stating, “I am grateful to my friend Ambassador Hugues Sanon for offering me the opportunity to attend this important global conference to listen and speak on the critical issue of drug use and abuse.”
Ambassador Hugues Sanon highlighted the collaborative efforts with Senator Borrello and County Executive Wendel, emphasizing the importance of mobilizing resources to address the global issue of drug abuse and work towards effective solutions.
The conference concluded with Senator Borrello being honored with the "Ambassador of Peace Award" and the "Leadership Award" for his dedicated efforts to combat drug abuse and its impact on communities.
