Chautauqua County officials have recognized the long-serving Dunkirk Police Chief, David Ortolano, for his extensive service and leadership as he retires. Chief Ortolano concluded his career on November 22, 2024, after over three decades in law enforcement.

Ortolano's career began in 1985 as a Patrolman with the Dunkirk Police Department. He was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 1997, became a Lieutenant in 2000, and took on the role of Chief of Police in February 2005. As Chief for nearly two decades, Ortolano led with integrity and commitment to public safety.

During his tenure, Ortolano focused on community policing initiatives such as Neighborhood Watch and National Night Out programs to strengthen ties between the police department and Dunkirk residents. His leadership prioritized quality of life improvements across neighborhoods, waterfronts, and parks.

Beyond local efforts, Ortolano co-founded the Chautauqua Fallen Heroes Fund to support families of first responders killed or critically injured on duty. He also served on the Chautauqua County Traffic Safety Board.

The commendation from County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr., Legislator Robert Bankoski (District 2), and Legislator Marcus Buchanan (District 1) acknowledges Ortolano’s contributions to Dunkirk and Chautauqua County.
