On March 23, 1825, Sherman witnessed its first recorded marriage between Lester Dewey and Fanny Patterson. In 1866, Jamestown Academy merged with the Union School to form what eventually became Jamestown High School. An oil well in Jamestown hit its first "sand" in 1877 but was unsuccessful; however, it did produce mineral water piped to Brooklyn Square from 1881 to 1891.
