The "Santa for Seniors" program in Chautauqua County is set to launch for the 2024 holiday season, aiming to bring joy and a festive meal to over 200 isolated older adults. This initiative is organized by the Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services with support from community partners and volunteers.
Dana Corwin, Interim Director of the Office for Aging Services, stated, "During the holiday season, an incredible collaboration takes place among community organizations and dedicated volunteers who gather items, raise funds, carefully pack boxes, and personally deliver them to individuals identified by community and government agencies.” She expressed gratitude for the community's unwavering support.
Volunteers at The First Baptist Church of Mayville are packing gifts as part of this effort. Deliveries will start in early December. Partners include The First Baptist Church of Mayville and Hurlbut Memorial Community United Methodist Church’s Reverend J. Paul Womack Christmas Basket Fund.
Corwin highlighted the importance of these partnerships: “We are incredibly fortunate to have exceptional community partners involved in our Santa for Seniors program.” Donations from local churches help cover expenses such as meals and postage.
The program seeks to reach about 30 new older adults each year, offering not only gifts but also companionship. Corwin quoted W.C. Jones: "'the joy of brightening others' lives...is the true magic of the holiday season.'"
Community members are encouraged to participate in deliveries. Contributions for this year's campaign should be submitted by November 15, 2024. Interested parties can contact ccsantaforseniors@gmail.com or call 716-753-4582.
Key dates include donation sorting on December 2, care package preparation on December 8, final packing on December 10, and delivery commencement on December 12.
Nominations for seniors who might be alone during the holidays can be made through NY Connects at 716-753-4582 or ccnyc@chqgov.com.
