Notable events mark Chautauqua County history: October week review

Chautauqua County's history from October 6 to October 12 highlights significant events that have shaped the region's cultural and social landscape. Norman Carlson, Chautauqua County Historian, has compiled these notable occurrences.

On October 6, 1914, the Busti Village Improvement Society was formed to enhance village life through community initiatives. In 1941, Robert H. Jackson became a U.S. Supreme Court Justice, known for his legal contributions and civil rights work.

October 7 saw the dedication of Lakewood-Bentley Cemetery in 1859 and a steamboat named Jamestown burned due to arson in 1875. The influenza epidemic hit Jamestown in 1918, affecting public health significantly. Construction began on the Busti Church of God in 1951, which was later destroyed by a tornado in 1985.

The Fredonia Baptist Church was organized on October 8, 1808. Howard Ehmke pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics against the Chicago Cubs in the World Series opener in 1927. The first meeting of Jamestown Aviation Club occurred in 1940. The inaugural Crèche Tag Day fundraiser took place in Jamestown in 1943. An atomic bomb drill was conducted in Falconer and Jamestown during the Cold War on this day in 1955.

On October 9, Boomertown post office was established in Ashville in 1883 but discontinued by May 31, 1913. Theosophical Society of Jamestown began contributing to local spiritual discourse in1890. Night school commenced at Jamestown High School for immigrant education in1905; schools closed due to influenza that same year until November11.

The Busti Post Office opened on October10,1823,and served until1907.The Philharmonic Society of Jamestown was founded on this day1859.The League of Women Voters' local chapter started promoting civic engagement1925.The first concert by Jamestown Civic Music Association took place1928.Herbert's Shoes closed its doors after years serving locals2004.

In Mayville,onOctober11of1819,the only living African lion then exhibited attracted attention.In1859,the county board changed its name from Chautauque to Chautauqua.Standardizing identity is significant.Senator Richard Nixon visited during his vice-presidential campaign whistle-stop event emphasizing national political engagement locally1952.George Pettit purchased jailhouse windmill from county government1895for$29 adding intrigue economic history hereabouts!
