A local support group in Jamestown, N.Y., initially created to help family members caring for loved ones experiencing psychosis, has expanded its services. The group now supports all caregivers of individuals with mental illness.
Founded in 2022 by retired LMSW Lisa Greeley and guided by the Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene, the Circle of Support provides a space for caregivers to share experiences and ideas. The group aims to uplift its members through mutual support.
The Circle of Support has become a resource for those supporting loved ones through mental health challenges. Liz Leighton, a clinic care coordinator at the Department, now facilitates the group. Leighton brings her perspective as a caregiver familiar with Chautauqua County's mental health care systems.
“We’ve seen how impactful it can be for people to connect with others in similar situations,” says Leighton. “The group is a safe space where members can express their concerns, share their frustrations, and celebrate progress in their caregiving journeys.”
The Circle of Support emphasizes community building through regular meetings where caregivers share stories and receive guidance. Local mental health providers also join these meetings to offer expertise and answer questions.
The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at Jamestown City Hall on the 5th floor. Meetings are open to anyone in the community providing support to someone with a mental illness.
“We’re committed to ensuring that everyone in our community who is supporting someone with a mental health challenge feels seen, supported, and empowered,” says Clinic Director Tamie Coleman. “Caregiving can be an isolating experience, but no one has to go through it alone.”
