The Chautauqua County Youth Bureau is currently searching for young individuals aged 13 to 21 to serve as representatives on the New York State Governor’s Youth Council. According to the Bureau, this opportunity provides a platform for youth to actively participate in state governance and have their voices heard by decision-makers.

As stated by the Youth Bureau, "This is an incredible opportunity for youth to represent Chautauqua County on a statewide level." The Youth Council, which consists of one representative from each county in New York, totaling 62 members, is described as being youth-run, adult-supported, and serves as a forum for advocacy.

Members of the NYS Governor’s Youth Council are expected to address various key issues affecting young individuals in the state. These topics include, but are not limited to, "Influence and Positive Role Models & Mentors," "Mental Health Challenges on Youth," "Substance use and Prevention," "Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion," "Gender-based Violence and Prevention & Response," "Creating Positive Interactions Between Youth and law Enforcement," "Youth Programming in a Virtual World," "Youth Voice & Engagement: Creating Opportunities," and "Addressing Identity and Community Needs."

According to the Bureau, interested youth can apply and gather more information through the online portal at nysylc.secure-platform.com. The deadline for applications is May 13, 2024. From the pool of applicants, three individuals will be selected to advance to the State final selection committee, where one will be chosen to serve on the Youth Council.

Once appointed, members will be expected to participate in virtual and statewide meetings, training sessions, and other shared learning experiences. The selection criteria for candidates include their character, leadership abilities, academic accomplishments, civic engagement, and community service.

This initiative offers a unique chance for young individuals in Chautauqua County to actively engage in state affairs and contribute to shaping policies that affect their peers across New York State.
