A dominant second half from the Alfred University men's basketball team led to an 80-63 win over Keuka College on Saturday afternoon from the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.
The Saxons (18-6, 13-4 Empire 8) outscored the Wolves (7-14, 3-13 Empire 8) by a 43-24 margin in the second half, while winning the rebound battle by a 48-42 battle.
Alfred University was led by Brewster Marshall (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads), who finished the game with a double-double performance that consisted of 29 points and 10 rebounds. Mike Schmidt (Olean, NY/Olean) totaled 13 points, nine assists, four rebounds and three steals. Adam Enders (Belfast, NY/Belfast) added 12 points and five boards for AU.
"I was happy with the second half performance from our team tonight," Head Coach Erich Kaempffe. "Our guys did a great job adjusting to a well-prepared Keuka team."
The Saxons relied on Enders early in the first half, as he scored nine of the team's first 14 points. The Wolves responded with an 11-3 run to tie the game with over 11 minutes remaining in the half. Following four lead changes, Keuka scored in the final minute to carry a 39-37 lead going into the break.
Marshall opened scoring for Alfred University in the second half, scoring the team's first four points. Moments later, a layup from Darren Miller (Seneca Falls, NY/Mynderse Academy) was followed by a 3-point shot from Marshall to take back the lead. A quick 10-0 run for the Saxons gave the team their first double-digit advantage of the afternoon. The defense for AU held its own to close out the game, limiting Keuka to just four points across the last five minutes to hold on for the win.
"There aren't words that would properly describe what this group of seniors means to our program or to me personally," Kaempffe said. "We're going to do our best to prepare for an Elmira team that is playing great right now."
Alfred University will next conclude their regular season next Saturday against Elmira College with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
