The Alfred University women's cheerleading team had its earliest competition since moving to varsity as they traveled to the Penn State Behrend Spirit Against Cancer competition on Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons earned first place in the women's college all-girl intermediate division, scoring 71 points out of 90 possible. The scores are based off of an average number from three officials as two officials gave AU scores of 76.5 and 75.5.
"I'm really impressed! I think, given the fact that they've only had three weeks of practice since beginning the season, that they were able to pull off a full routine with very few mistakes," Head Coach Amy Button-Ervin said. "We need to spend the next month before our next competition cleaning things up and improving our skills to make sure we can compete at a higher level, one that we see at these competitions and one that we know we'll get to someday."
The Saxons will next compete in a two-competition weekend when they travel for the Keuka College Cheer and Dance Classic on Saturday, March 11.
Then, they compete in the Elmira College Upstate Collegiate Championship the following day.
