Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. recognized the retirement of Dr. Mary Ann Spanos, Director of the Office for Aging Services, during a legislature meeting on Wednesday night. Dr. Spanos has been a prominent advocate for seniors in the county for over two decades.
Wendel read a letter of commendation praising Spanos' dedication: “Dr. Spanos has exemplified exceptional leadership, improving the lives of countless seniors throughout Chautauqua County.” Her tenure began in 1999 and concluded with her retirement on September 18, 2024. She led programs aimed at promoting independence and wellness among seniors.
Spanos started her career as a physical therapist specializing in geriatric rehabilitation in 1986. As director, she focused on initiatives to help seniors remain at home and engaged with their communities. Wendel also noted her national role as President of USAging.
In 2022, Spanos was honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by the New York State Senate for her contributions to enhancing older adults' quality of life.
Wendel expressed gratitude: "I thank Dr. Spanos for her unwavering service, her commitment to the well-being of our seniors, and her role as an inspiring leader in our community, and wish her all the best in retirement."
Dana Corwin has been appointed Interim Director following Spanos' retirement. Corwin is a registered nurse from Mayville who joined the department in 2008 and worked closely with Spanos.
“Dana’s appointment ensures that we will continue to build on the strong foundation Dr. Spanos has laid over the years,” said Wendel. “I am confident that under Dana’s leadership, we will continue to provide critical services to our seniors and their families.”
Corwin acknowledged Spanos' influence: “Dr. Spanos taught me not only the logistical side of running this office but also the heart behind it. Her passion for helping people stay in their homes and communities is something I will carry forward.”
