Chautauqua County will hold a press conference on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 2 p.m. outside the County Courthouse to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). This day, initiated on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations (UN), aims to unite communities globally in raising awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Statistics indicate that approximately 1 in 10 older Americans experience elder abuse annually. However, experts suggest that this issue is under-reported, with only 1 in 14 cases coming to the attention of authorities. The repercussions of elder abuse extend beyond individual victims, impacting public health and economic stability within communities.
The event organizers emphasize the importance of community support services and resources to prevent elder abuse. "When we come together, we can make a difference," they stated. They call for a national commitment to justice and a robust support system for aging individuals.
The press conference aims to raise awareness and promote elder well-being. It will be live-streamed on Chautauqua County's YouTube page, with a recording available for those unable to attend in person.
