Francisco Morales enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman and served 20 years with distinction, ultimately attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. His service included light and airborne infantry assignments, drill sergeant duty, and deployments to the Balkans, Africa, and twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 26, 2006, during his second deployment in Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division, Mr. Morales's unit was ambushed by over 60 Taliban fighters. He led his men through the battle and saved four wounded soldiers.
Mr. Morales received the Silver Star Medal for his valor, conspicuous gallantry, and intrepidity in action, as well as the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat. After 20 years of service, he earned numerous awards for achievement including the Combat and Expert Infantry Badges, the Parachutist Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge.
His final assignment was at St. Bonaventure University as a Senior Military Science Instructor in the university’s Army ROTC program. He spent three years there dedicating himself to building future Army leaders.
Continuing his journey at St. Bonaventure University after retirement from military service, Mr. Morales attended graduate school and earned a Master of Mental Health Counseling degree. He created a Student Veterans Association Chapter and eventually became Director of St. Bonaventure's Office of Veterans Services.
Mr. Morales has established a legacy at St. Bonaventure University with two of his sons graduating from there and being inducted into its ROTC Hall of Fame.
Currently residing in Portville, New York with his wife Crystal and children Christian, Julian, and Isabella; Mr. Morales spends his time mentoring veterans on various aspects of life through community veterans programs in Western New York.
