Chautauqua County's Department of Planning and Development, in partnership with the Department of Health and CHQ Transit, has announced the upcoming launch of the first annual Active Transportation Week, scheduled for May 13 to May 17. The initiative aims to promote the use of alternative modes of transportation and reduce reliance on personal motor vehicles.
Stephanie Nick, Chautauqua County Special Project Coordinator, emphasized the benefits of embracing public transit and other sustainable transportation options, stating, "Encouraging a greater number of individuals to embrace public transit, cycling, or walking isn't just good for Chautauqua County—it's a win-win for everyone."
The week-long event will feature various activities, including a focus on riding bikes to work on Friday, May 17, as well as family-friendly Group Bicycle Rides in Jamestown and Dunkirk. Participants are encouraged to join in with friends, coworkers, and family members to promote a sense of community and interconnectedness.
The initiative aligns with a nationwide effort to reduce single-rider vehicle trips, cut CO2 emissions, and build a more vibrant and sustainable community. By prioritizing accessible and eco-friendly modes of transportation such as walking, biking, skating, bussing, or carpooling, Chautauqua County is taking steps towards a greener future.
