The Chautauqua County Health Department in Mayville, N.Y. is emphasizing the importance of safety precautions for residents planning to view the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th. Chief Medical Officer, Michael Faulk, warns that regular sunglasses are not sufficient for protecting the eyes during the eclipse, stating, “Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe for viewing the Sun. Safe solar-viewers are thousands of times darker and must comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard in order to ensure your eyes are properly protected.”

To prevent eye damage or injury, residents are advised to wear certified protective eyewear while looking at the Sun. Faulk also cautions against using optical devices like telescopes or binoculars in conjunction with eclipse glasses, as they do not offer additional protection.

In an effort to promote safe viewing practices, the Chautauqua County Government is providing FREE ISO approved solar viewing glasses, available for pick up at various locations throughout the county. Faulk stresses the importance of using proper eyewear, stating, “Many people may want to get a closer look at the eclipse via a telescope or binoculars, or they may want to take a photo. It is NOT safe to look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses.”

The Health Department has outlined important dos and don'ts to ensure safe eclipse viewing, including using special “eclipse glasses” that comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard, inspecting glasses before use, supervising children, and limiting viewing time with eclipse glasses.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for the eclipse by signing up for the NY-Alert system to receive critical information and emergency alerts for Chautauqua County.
