Expiration of Title 42 Reinforces Need for Immediate Action at Southern Border
On the same day the Biden Administration allowed Title 42 to expire, Congressman Nick Langworthy voted in favor of H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023 that passed the House 219-213.
H.R. 2 is a comprehensive bill comprised of legislation that passed through the House Homeland Security, Judiciary and Foreign Affairs Committees. It has to main goals: secure the border and combat illegal immigration.
Specifically, the legislation will:
- Force the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall;
- Deploy technology to the southern and northern border;
- Increase the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay;
- Require transparency regarding illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security;
- Strengthen current law to protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking;
- End catch and release;
- End abuse of executive immigration authority, and
- Strengthen and streamline the asylum process.
Title 42 has stopped more than 2 million migrants from coming across the border. Congressman Langworthy highlighted the growing crisis in New York that will be exacerbated by the midnight repeal that is expected to cause a drastic increase of migrants into Upstate communities. A group of bipartisan County Executives across New York are issuing State of Emergency declarations.
“Title 42 was one of the only tools we had to turn migrants away and its repeal is going to have devastating consequences on Upstate communities who are already struggling to make ends meet and deliver services. I cannot stress this enough: we need action today and I’m urging President Biden and Senator Schumer to come to the table before it’s too late.”
