The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is moving forward with the rehabilitation of the Interstate 86 bridges over Chautauqua Lake, a project aimed at improving safety and extending the life of this important route for Western New York.
The ongoing work has caused disruptions, especially in the Village of Bemus Point. In response to concerns from Chautauqua County officials and local residents, NYSDOT announced it is building a temporary eastbound exit ramp off I-86. This ramp will restore direct access to Bemus Point’s central business district. The temporary ramp is under construction and expected to open soon, remaining available until the project’s completion, which is scheduled for late 2027.
County Executive PJ Wendel expressed appreciation for NYSDOT’s action: “I want to thank the New York State Department of Transportation for listening to the concerns of Chautauqua County residents and taking action to restore access to the Village of Bemus Point during the I-86 bridge rehabilitation project.”
Wendel said that the new ramp will ease difficulties faced by businesses, residents, and visitors who depend on this connection. “Bemus Point is a vibrant hub of tourism, culture, and commerce, especially during the summer season,” Wendel stated. “This temporary ramp will help sustain the community’s economy and ensure that people can continue to enjoy all the village has to offer while this critical infrastructure work continues.”
NYSDOT Region 5 Director Eric Meka noted the agency’s commitment: “We are pleased to report that NYSDOT is working to restore access to Bemus Point via a temporary exit ramp on Interstate 86 eastbound. We appreciate the public’s patience as we continue this important project and remain committed to keeping the community apprised of future developments.”
