NYPA's decision to delay its proposed hydropower rate increase has been met with approval from various stakeholders in New York. Senator George Borrello expressed satisfaction with the pause, describing it as a positive outcome for New Yorkers, businesses, and communities reliant on affordable clean energy. The proposed rate hike would have nearly tripled current rates.
Senator Borrello emphasized that he, Assemblyman Andrew Molitor, and other Republican colleagues actively opposed the increase before it could be implemented. "The overwhelming pushback from legislators, businesses, municipal utility providers, and residents made it clear that this proposal was unacceptable," said Borrello. He noted that Governor Kathy Hochul halted the proposal after recognizing significant opposition.
Borrello stressed the importance of keeping energy costs manageable to support jobs, families, and a competitive economy. He stated that efforts must continue to ensure NYPA does not revisit the rate hike proposal in the future and that access to reliable, low-cost energy remains available for New Yorkers.
