Chautauqua County's historical highlights from February dates span decades

Chautauqua County has a rich history filled with notable events that have contributed to its development and culture. From February 9 to 15, several significant occurrences have been documented over the years.

On February 9, 1871, the Methodist Camp Meeting Association was established in Mayville with plans to acquire land on Chautauqua Lake. This area would later become the site of the well-known Chautauqua Institution. In 1885, S.S. Peter and Paul’s Branch 77 of the Catholic Mutual Benevolent Association was organized in Jamestown. A Jamestown City Council meeting was stormed by communists in 1931, reflecting political unrest at the time. The county experienced extremely cold temperatures in 1934, reaching -36°F at Busti Mill and -25°F in Jamestown. The Green Farm fashion shop in Lakewood closed its doors in 2002.

February 10 marked the beginning of daily stage service between Erie and Buffalo in 1825, which passed through Chautauqua County and improved regional connectivity. The Westfield Union School was organized in 1868, providing educational opportunities for the community. In 1877, the Farmers' Club of Hanover was formed to support agricultural development. Jamestown observed Negro History Week for the first time in 1957. Demolition began on the Union National factory in Jamestown in 1997.

On February 11, Quince Converse pushed a barrel of flour from Jamestown to Frewsburg after losing a bet in 1873, creating a local legend. A memorial service for former President Woodrow Wilson took place at Wintergarden Theater in Jamestown in 1924. Leonard Lee brutally beat his housekeeper Mrs. Dorothy Ware to death in Kiantone in 1947. Dunkirk approved selling its municipal electrical distribution system to Niagara Mohawk via referendum that same year.

February 12 saw Cornplanter's passing near Chautauqua County at Cornplanter Grant in 1836; he was an important Native American leader. Summer cottages at Lakewood were burglarized during this period as early as1897; highlighting crime concerns.
