The Chautauqua County Health Department has announced a boil water order for all customers of the Village of Fredonia's water system, including properties outside the village boundaries. This action is in compliance with New York State Department of Health regulations, which mandate such orders when water treatment is insufficient.

A disruption at the water treatment plant resulted in inadequately treated water entering the distribution system. This poses a risk of harmful microbes being present in the water supply. To mitigate this risk, residents are advised to boil their water for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing coffee until further notice. The boiling process involves bringing the water to a rolling boil for one minute and then allowing it to cool before use.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for hand-washing dishes, ensuring they air dry completely afterward. Dishwashers that reach 170°F and have a full dry cycle can use tap water safely. Bathing with tap water is permissible as long as it is not ingested, and laundry can be done without restrictions.

The village will conduct consecutive daily tests on the water once normal treatment operations resume to confirm its safety. Public notifications will inform residents when the boil water order is lifted.

Further details on boiling water and emergency disinfection can be found on the New York State Department of Health website. Updates will also be available on the Chautauqua County website. Residents may contact the Village of Fredonia at (716) 679-2307 for more information, while facilities permitted by the Chautauqua County Health Department can reach out directly at (716) 753-4481.

The Chautauqua County Health Department emphasizes its commitment to public health through various programs aimed at disease prevention and community wellness. More information about their services is available at www.HealthyCHQ.com.
