On February 2nd, 1856, Mayville experienced an intense cold spell with temperatures plummeting to -34°F. In 1871, a fire ravaged two blocks in downtown Jamestown, significantly altering the business district. The Fortnightly Club was established in Jamestown in 1894 as a literary society promoting intellectual discussions. Dunkirk Dave made his first appearance in 1967 as a local weather predictor for winter’s length. The Busti Historical Society was formed in 1972 to preserve the town's history.
