The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, along with the Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services, has issued a warning regarding a scam targeting recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Mayville, New York.
Authorities have received multiple reports about fraudulent text messages being sent to SNAP beneficiaries. The deceptive message states: “We’ve deactivated your food benefits card. Call 888-421-6229 to restore its use.” This message urges recipients to provide their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card number and PIN. Once scammers obtain this information, they can access and spend the funds on the card. Under New York state guidelines, these funds cannot be refunded.
Residents are advised not to share their EBT card details over the phone, via text messages, or through email.
For those who receive suspicious communications or require assistance with their SNAP benefits, it is recommended that they contact their local social services office directly.
