Chautauqua County promotes total wellness with evidence-based programs

The Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services is working to improve health and wellness among older adults through evidence-based programs. These programs, grounded in scientific research, aim to reduce disease and enhance overall well-being by addressing multiple dimensions of wellness.

Health promotion initiatives have been part of the Older American Act since 1987, supporting healthy lifestyles for individuals aged 60 and above. The National Wellness Institute outlines six dimensions of wellness: emotional, occupational, social, intellectual, spiritual, and physical. While many focus primarily on physical health—diet, exercise, and disease management—total wellness requires attention to all these areas.

"Evidenced-Based Programs (EBP) are based on scientific evidence and have been tested for their effectiveness in reducing disease, and improving health and total wellness," said Carey Skelton MS MPH RDN CDN/ Nutrition & Wellness Coordinator. The Chautauqua County Office offers several EBPs designed specifically for older adults.

One such program is the Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE), a six-week series beginning January 27th in Jamestown, NY. This program covers topics like aging-related changes and medication management while also fostering social connections through group classes.

Additionally, the office provides "Powerful Tools for Caregivers" in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association. Scheduled three times in 2025 across various county regions, this program supports caregivers' emotional and intellectual wellness while enhancing social interaction.

Plans are underway to expand these offerings throughout Chautauqua County into 2026. To stay informed about upcoming programs, residents can register with the office's communication system via text, email or robo-call by contacting NY Connects at 716-753-4582.

The office encourages making healthy daily choices as small steps toward optimal wellness. They offer various nutrition and wellness programs to assist residents on this journey. Funding support comes from grants provided by entities including the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), Administration on Aging (AOA), and Administration for Community Living (ACL). It is noted that no endorsement by New York State is implied.
