In 1972, the Senior Nutrition Program (SNP) was introduced as part of the Older Americans Act federal regulations. Its purpose was to enhance socialization, promote health and well-being among older adults, and reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. Over fifty years later, these nutrition programs remain relevant.

Chautauqua County offers both Dining In and Dining Out programs under its SNP. The Dining In program delivers meals to frail and home-bound older adults, providing a safety check with each meal package. These meals meet federal nutrition standards.

The Dining Out Program offers meal services in social or group settings. Participants register by calling the NY Connects line and receive a CHQAging card for use at participating locations. Gratuity is not included in the service, so participants are encouraged to tip their servers. Each month, 20 meal units are uploaded to the card automatically but expire if unused by month's end. There is a limit of one meal per day.

Participants have an opportunity to contribute to the program at month's end based on their usage of meal units at participating locations. A suggested contribution is $5 per meal, which supports expanding services for more older adults in Chautauqua County.

Participating locations include Meeders, Central Station, Shur-Fine in Cassadaga, UPMC Café, Sinclairville 76ers, with more expected in 2025. A Grand Opening event will be held at Fredonia First Methodist Church on January 15th, 2025.

Each location provides a special menu approved by dietitians that meets Older Americans Act nutrition standards. The menus differ from regular offerings and focus on calorie-appropriate and nutrient-balanced meals.

Eligibility for the Dining Out Program is open to individuals over age 60. Interested parties can obtain a CHQAging card by contacting NY Connects at 716-753-4582.

Chautauqua County Office for Aging Services also offers Nutrition & Wellness programs aimed at helping individuals achieve optimal wellness through healthy choices. Contributions from participants support these programs' sustainability; SNAP benefits may be used toward contributions.

For more information about these programs or details on how to contribute, contact NY Connects at 716-753-4582.
