There was one less active legal license in Wyoming County in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, according to the NYS Attorney Registrations.

Wyoming County had 10 active legal licenses in the second quarter of 2024, as opposed to 11 the quarter before.

Data refers to all lawyers who were actively practicing during this time period.

While New York has the nation's largest lawyer population at nearly 190,000, most are concentrated around New York City. Only 3% of all the legal force serves the remaining 85% of the state's territory.

As of 2019, nearly 75% of rural New York State attorneys were 45-years-old or older, which was one of the most concerning findings from a report on rural law practice. The report predicted that most rural lawyers in New York State will retire within 30 years and not be replaced by younger attorneys.

“There are not nearly enough lawyers to address the needs of smaller communities… There is, simply put, a crisis in terms of getting older lawyers to stay in their jobs longer than they are", said the president of the New York State Bar Association.

In June 2024, the average salary for an attorney working in New York State was around $109,298 per year, slightly above the national average
