A small fire was discovered by landfill crews at the Chautauqua County Landfill in Ellery, NY, on Monday morning. The fire was detected around 10:45 AM within the landfill debris cell.
Despite windy conditions posing a challenge, landfill personnel swiftly coordinated with local fire crews to address the situation. The combined efforts led to the successful extinguishment of the blaze within approximately one hour, and the fire was reported to be under control by 11:45 AM. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
While the exact cause of the fire is unclear, Aaron Gustafson, Manager of the Chautauqua County Landfill, has indicated that an improperly discarded battery may have been the source. Gustafson emphasized the importance of proper waste disposal, stating, "We urge all customers of the landfill to be mindful of the waste they are discarding. Prohibited materials, such as batteries, pose a significant fire risk."
The Chautauqua County Landfill continues to prioritize safety and environmental responsibility. Additional measures and reminders about proper disposal practices are routinely communicated to ensure the continued well-being of the community and landfill operations.
