The Chautauqua County Health Department, on behalf of the Village of Fredonia, has issued a boil water order for all Village of Fredonia water customers, including those in the Town of Pomfret, until further notice. This announcement was made by Media Contact, Justin Gould, who stated, "BOIL WATER ORDER ISSUED FOR VILLAGE OF FREDONIA WATER CUSTOMERS."
The boil water order was put in place due to the scheduled cleaning of the tank at the water treatment plant, which resulted in water with elevated levels of turbidity entering the distribution system. The water may contain harmful microbes, prompting the need for boiling before consumption. Gould emphasized that, "Boiling the water kills bacteria and other microbes that may be present."
Residents in the affected area are advised to boil water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and making coffee until further notice. The water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and then cooled before use. Additionally, boiled or bottled water is recommended for washing dishes by hand, while the water is safe for laundry and bathing as long as it is not consumed.
The Village of Fredonia will monitor the turbidity levels closely and collect water samples on consecutive days to ensure the safety of the water. Public notifications and press releases will be issued to inform residents when the boil water order is lifted.
