The Alfred University women's track & field team finished the first day of the two-day All-Atlantic Regional Track & Field Conference (AARTFC) Indoor Championships, hosted at The Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory on Friday evening.
Anne Spila (Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity) broke her own school record in the indoor pentathlon on Friday evening. She captured the record last week during the first day of the Empire 8 Indoor Championships at Nazareth College, scoring 2,792 points. The record as of Friday morning on February 24 belonged to Jen Brewer who set it at 2,693 points, set in 1999. When the first runners started crossing the finish line in the 800-meter run, closing out the pentathlon, teammate, Bianca Durso (Utica, NY/New Hartford Senior) broke Brewer's record first, totaling 2,749 points as she crossed the finish line before Spila. Spila took the record just second later.
On Friday, from The Armory, Spila totaled 2,803 points in the pentathlon with three events scoring higher in AARTFC's compared to Empire 8's. Her top scoring event was the 60-meter hurdles, running a time of 10.15 for 684 points. She increased her scores in the high jump by clearing 1.51m for 632 points, throwing a mark of 8.54m for 434 points in the shot put and running a time of 2:43.75 in the 800-meter run for 531 points.
Spila was just six points away from ninth place to replace Abrianna Kruger of SUNY Geneseo.
The Saxons' distance medley relay team of Olivia Gilbert (Ontario, NY/Wayne Central), Ashley Page (Wayland, NY/Wayland-Cohocton), Sarah Lutkins (Union Springs, NY/Union Springs) and McKenzie Hall (Hornell, NY/Hornell) finished 12th with a time of 12:56.23. They were just behind Stockton University's team time of 12:55.08 as they out-finished the Ithaca College team's time of 12:58.58. The Saxons were just under 14 seconds away from scoring a team point on Friday.
Nyah Solly (Colden, NY/Springville-Griffith Institute) also competed on Friday where she finished 12th in the long jump, clearing 5.22m. She hit that mark on her third and final attempt as she 'jumped' up from 18th place.
On the men's side, Jason Crocker (Oreland, PA/Springfield Township) finished 28th with a toss of 13.19m. Neil Peters (The Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) ran a 60-meter prelim time of 7.25 to finish 41st.
