PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy declared May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and stated the week of May 15th shall be National Police Week. The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office has had one Peace Officer die in the line of duty in our 181 year history. Jailor Blakely Humphrey was attacked and brutally beaten by two inmates on May 17, 1961 and he succumbed to his murderous injuries on May 27, 1961. Blake Humphrey’s name is displayed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC and its tracing is displayed in our lobby. Let us remember.
