Following reports that Governor Kathy Hochul has instructed the New York Power Authority to construct a nuclear power plant in Upstate New York, Senator George Borrello expressed his support for the initiative. He described it as a “commonsense approach to provide reliable, affordable clean energy in the form of nuclear power.” However, he urged the governor to consider the NRG power plant site in Dunkirk, NY as one of the chosen locations for this development.
Senator Borrello highlighted the economic challenges faced by Dunkirk following the closure of the NRG Power Plant. He noted that it had resulted in job losses and a decline in critical revenue for the city. Instead of offering short-term financial solutions like “the $13.7 million loan at a steep 7.5% interest rate,” Borrello suggested that Governor Hochul should focus on long-term investments by converting the NRG site into one of New York’s new nuclear facilities.
He emphasized that such an investment would not only restore essential tax revenue but also create well-paying jobs and bring about much-needed economic recovery for Dunkirk. In conclusion, Borrello stated, “If Governor Hochul is truly committed to supporting the City of Dunkirk, she must make the NRG Power Plant a part of her plan.”
