Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt and Public Defender Nathaniel Barone held a press conference on May 16, 2025, following the sentencing of Hadi Matar. Matar was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted murder with an additional five years of post-release supervision. He also received a seven-year sentence for assault, which includes three years of post-release supervision. Both sentences will run concurrently.
During the press conference, DA Schmidt commented on the case’s resolution: “This sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes committed and holds Mr. Matar accountable for his actions.”
Public Defender Barone spoke about his client’s future: “We will continue to support Mr. Matar as he serves his sentence and prepares for eventual reintegration into society.”
The sentences were imposed following Matar’s conviction in a high-profile case that drew significant public attention.
