The Chautauqua County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting residents to a phishing scam involving fraudulent text messages that falsely claim to be from the DMV. These texts suggest recipients owe fines and attempt to obtain personal information.
This local warning aligns with a statewide alert from the New York State DMV about scams that exploit trusted names. These scams often mimic official communications, making them appear legitimate.
“These scams are deeply concerning because they prey on the trust residents place in government agencies,” stated Kerri R. Smith, Motor Vehicle Administrator for Chautauqua County DMV locations. “Our offices will never text customers asking for personal information or payment. If you receive one of these messages, delete it immediately and do not click on any links.”
The fraudulent texts are part of a wider trend where scammers aim to acquire sensitive data like Social Security numbers, bank account details, or driver license numbers. Some messages may also install harmful software if links are clicked.
DMV officials advise:
– Do not share personal information via email or text.
– Avoid clicking on suspicious links, even if they seem legitimate.
– Look for red flags such as misspellings or unfamiliar URLs.
– Report suspicious messages to authorities.
“Protecting your identity starts with being vigilant,” Smith added. “When in doubt, contact your local DMV office directly or visit the official DMV website for accurate information.”
