Applications are now open for the Chautauqua County 3% Tourism Development Grant Program. This initiative is aimed at increasing the visibility of Chautauqua County beyond its borders and attracting more visitors, particularly those staying overnight.
The grant program is funded by a 5% Occupancy Tax from lodging rentals within the county. Of this tax, 60 cents per dollar (or 3%) is allocated to boost events, marketing, and destination development in the area. Each year, a portion of these funds is reserved for local tourism product development grants.
Grants up to $20,000 are available with a requirement for a 1:1 match. Applications are accepted online annually between July 1 and October 1 for funding in the following year. Projects must be developmental and not intended for maintenance or long-term operational costs. New or significantly updated initiatives are encouraged to apply, with a three-year lifetime funding limit per project.
“Strong proposals will focus on new or significantly expanded niche experiences that enhance what we offer to travelers,” states the announcement. Collaborative projects that unite communities or attractions and avoid duplication of existing efforts are also welcomed.
Projects leveraging shoulder seasons and demonstrating potential for public and private investment are particularly encouraged. Applicants should include plans for follow-up and show measurable results, especially an increase in visitors from outside the county.
Applications can only be submitted online through the Planning and Development website at planningchautauqua.com; hard copies will not be accepted.
Eligible applicants include not-for-profits, governments, businesses/corporations, public or private schools, and all landowners in Chautauqua County.
