Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. has announced the upcoming 2nd Annual Chautauqua Lake Symposium, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel in Celoron. The event is set to begin at 9:00 AM and is open to all community members free of charge.
The symposium aims to bring together experts and residents to discuss the current state and future prospects of Chautauqua Lake. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream will be available on Chautauqua County’s YouTube page.
A significant part of the event will be dedicated to a public Q&A session as part of the ongoing Chautauqua Lake Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study. This study is supported by federal and local funding sources and seeks solutions for critical issues affecting the lake’s ecosystem. Attendees are encouraged to submit questions beforehand via email or on-site using index cards.
The study involves a $3 million collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, focusing on strategies for restoring aquatic ecosystems, improving water quality, enhancing recreational opportunities, and mitigating flood risks.
Representatives from the Pittsburgh District will present an overview of their research objectives and methodologies during the symposium. Their work addresses environmental challenges such as invasive species and harmful algal blooms specific to Chautauqua Lake.
Additional presentations will include research findings from the Jefferson Project and North Carolina State University, along with insights from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Informational booths hosted by various stakeholders will also be available for attendees.
