On July 13, 1823, the Ellington Christian Church was organized as part of the Stone-Campbell (Restoration) Movement. In 1836, Fluvanna Temperance House opened as the first resort hotel on Chautauqua Lake. Notably, in 1881, ten human skeletons were discovered beneath the Chautauqua Institution auditorium.
