June marks Elder Abuse Awareness Month, with the theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day being “Beyond Age.” The campaign aims to challenge ageist attitudes and promote respect for older individuals. By shifting societal views and emphasizing the value of age, it seeks to create a safer society for older people and address ageism as a significant factor in elder abuse.

Elder abuse is a critical issue affecting millions globally. It can occur at the hands of family members, caregivers, or scammers and has severe consequences for victims and their families. Community vigilance is crucial in identifying and addressing this issue.

Various forms of elder abuse include physical harm, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect. Recognizing signs such as unexplained injuries, social withdrawal, sudden financial difficulties, poor hygiene, or anxiety around certain individuals is essential in preventing further harm.

Statistics indicate that one in six older adults experiences some form of abuse annually worldwide. Elder abuse can happen in private homes, care facilities, and community settings. Social isolation and cognitive decline are significant risk factors.

To report concerns about elder abuse in Chautauqua County, contact protective services for adults at 716-754-4447 or the Office for Aging Services at 716-753-4471.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day encourages open discussions to empower recognition and prevention of elder abuse. Participation can include wearing purple to show support, sharing information on social media about prevention resources, attending events like the annual press conference on June 16th at 2 PM in Mayville’s County courthouse steps, checking in with elderly acquaintances for support and companionship, and advocating for policies protecting older adults from mistreatment.

Education and action are vital tools against elder abuse. As people age, planning (please look at now) helps ensure they are equipped to live well at home.
