The Chautauqua County Health Department (CCHD) has announced a free rabies vaccination clinic in collaboration with the Town of Westfield. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Westfield Highway Department located at 118 Chestnut St., Westfield, NY 14787.

Vaccinations will be available for dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets aged three months and older. Pre-registration is mandatory and can be completed online by visiting HealthyCHQ.com/Rabies. The number of spots is limited, so pet owners are advised to register promptly. In case registrants decide not to attend, they are encouraged to cancel their appointments via the confirmation email received upon registration.

Pet owners must bring previous rabies vaccination records for each animal to ensure effective vaccination. All dogs should be on a leash, while cats and ferrets must be in individual carriers. Animal handlers will escort pets to the veterinarian for their shots.

New York State Public Health Law mandates that all dogs, cats, and domesticated ferrets over four months old be vaccinated against rabies. The CCHD encourages residents to comply with this law as responsible pet owners.

Rabies is a serious viral disease affecting warm-blooded animals and is commonly transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals like raccoons, bats, skunks, and foxes. It affects the central nervous system and can lead to brain swelling and death shortly after symptoms appear.

For further details about the clinic, contact the Town of Westfield at 716-326-3211. General information about rabies can be found on HealthyCHQ.com/Rabies or by contacting the Chautauqua County Health Department at (716) 753-4481.

The Chautauqua County Health Department remains committed to supporting community health through innovative programs aimed at preventing disease and promoting wellness across the county.
