Chautauqua County is dealing with a road salt shortage due to an unusually harsh winter affecting the Northeast. Persistent cold weather since December has increased demand for road salt, causing supply issues.

Despite these challenges, Chautauqua County highway crews have managed to secure a new shipment of road salt. The Department of Public Facilities plans to mix the salt with sand to make it last longer. “Mixing sand with our salt supply is a practical solution to extend what we have while still maintaining safe roads,” said Director of Public Facilities Tim Card. He noted that while sand provides traction, it does not melt ice like salt, urging residents to drive cautiously.

County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. acknowledged the hard work of the crews: “These crews have worked tirelessly, often without a break, to keep up with the conditions, and I want to personally thank them for their dedication and service to our residents.”

The City of Jamestown will also use a salt-sand mixture for road treatment. Mayor Kimberly Ecklund stated, “Our priority is the safety of our residents and travelers. By working closely with local municipalities and adjusting our strategies, we aim to maintain clear and safe roadways despite the supply challenges.”

Residents are advised to remain patient as warmer weather approaches. In the meantime, caution on roads is encouraged as conditions may vary.
