W. Brooke Harris, Chairman of the Allegany County Board of Legislators, proclaimed on Mar. 26 that March 2026 will be recognized as Agriculture Month in Allegany County.
The proclamation highlights the importance of agriculture to both the local community and New York State, emphasizing its role in providing food, supporting the economy, and preserving open spaces. Recognizing Agriculture Month aims to increase public appreciation for farmers and encourage interest in agricultural careers among young people.
According to the proclamation, New York State is home to over 33,000 farms spanning approximately 6.9 million acres—about one fifth of the state’s land area—and contributing more than $5.7 billion annually to the state economy through agricultural sales. The statement also notes that agriculture supports quality of life by ensuring access to fresh food and enhancing communities through activities such as farmers’ markets.
Harris said: “I urge all New Yorkers to join me in recognizing the importance of our food and agriculture industry, to thank a farmer for providing the food we eat, and to help celebrate every month with meals made from a variety of New York State products.” He further encouraged residents to use this opportunity not only for appreciation but also for education about how food is produced.
The initiative seeks not only recognition but also increased awareness about agriculture’s impact on daily life and its potential as a career path.
