The Chautauqua County Health Department (CCHD) recently highlighted the essential role of nurses in honor of National Nurses Week 2024. Cathy Burgess, Director of Community Health Nursing at CCHD, was recognized for her outstanding contributions to public health in a rural community. Burgess expressed her gratitude for the award, stating, "I chose to work in the public health field because I wanted to make a difference in my community and am honored and humbled to receive this award."

Burgess has been instrumental in various initiatives at CCHD, managing the Community Health and Nursing Division which includes programs such as Welcome Home Baby, hospital rounds, lactation support services, and Covid-19 coordination. Lacey Wilson, Public Health Director, commended Burgess for her exemplary work and the respect she has earned from local leaders, peers, and staff.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of nurses in healthcare, Wilson expressed gratitude to the nursing team, saying, "I thank you for all that you do to provide help and care in the moments that matter most." Nurses are recognized as trusted advocates, care providers, and service navigators who positively impact the lives of individuals in the community.

The CCHD emphasized the importance of recognizing nurses' contributions during National Nurses Week and encouraged the community to show appreciation for their hard work and dedication. The department is showcasing exemplary nurses on social media platforms and invites others to join in celebrating these healthcare professionals.

Nurses are described as the backbone of the healthcare system, relied upon for their knowledge, skills, and compassionate care. Their dedication to improving community health and access to care for underserved populations is crucial. The impact nurses have on society is immeasurable, making a real difference in the lives of individuals.

As National Nurses Week approaches, let us all take a moment to reflect on the significant role nurses play in public health and extend our gratitude for their unwavering commitment. The CCHD's recognition of nurses serves as a reminder of the invaluable contributions these healthcare professionals make to our communities.
