Sue Gagne, a registered nurse and mental health professional, has been named the 2024 New York State Senate 'Woman of Distinction' for the 57th District by Senator George Borrello. Senator Borrello highlighted Gagne's dedication to the mental health field and her efforts in assisting vulnerable individuals. "At a time when our communities are experiencing unprecedented mental health crises, we have become acutely aware of the vital role of professionals like Sue Gagne," said Senator Borrello.

Gagne's career in mental health spans over two decades, with experience in both nonprofit and public service sectors. Currently serving as the Assistant Director of Adult Services at the Wyoming County Mental Health Department, Gagne has been praised for her commitment to connecting individuals with services and expanding resources for rural residents. Senator Borrello emphasized the importance of Gagne's work in providing essential support to families and communities.

Having started her journey in mental health when seeking help for a family member, Gagne found her calling in assisting marginalized members of society. Her career progression from a part-time support position to becoming the executive director at the Mental Health Association of Genesee and Orleans Counties showcases her dedication to the field. Gagne's achievements include the establishment of the Visions of Hope Recovery Center, a program aiding individuals with mental health challenges.

Gagne's impact extends further as she serves as the Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the Genesee County Mental Health Department and works with individuals with Severe and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) at the Wyoming County Mental Health Department. Her involvement in professional organizations such as the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) and community programs demonstrates her commitment to mental health advocacy.

Recognized for her exceptional character and dedication, Gagne will be honored at a ceremony in Albany on May 14 alongside other distinguished women from across the state. Peggy Marone, executive director of Leadership Genesee, who nominated Gagne for the award, commended her as a mental health advocate and leader. Ms. Gagne's recognition as the 2024 Woman of Distinction underscores her significant contributions to the well-being of individuals and communities in Western New York.
